Universal Design is the cornerstone of Rochester Institute of Technology's Industrial Design program. From early on in our education we are encouraged to design inclusively especially considering RITÂ is host to the largest technical school for the deaf, NTID. For my sophomore Accessibility Design course we were tasked with creating a product that incorporates aspects of universal design. Kerra is a wristwatch that caters to everyone, but focuses on addressing a problem in the blind community. Kerra uses raised areas on the face to tell the time using a mathematics system of addition using factors of two. The decision to not use braille was made to not alienate anyone else who would want to use the product, breaking the stigma that products for accessibility only had to be used by the affected people.
